Introduction

Pocket Streetmap is a program designed to aid in personal navigation. Pocket Streetmap has detailed street, town and road level maps of the whole of mainland GB. This document details the functions in Pocket Streetmap and how to use them.

How to get the best from Pocket Streetmap

Pocket Streetmap load the maps it requires from, and searches locations using, the Internet. It holds a number of these maps after download in file storage (the cache) so that you do not have to go online again to retrieve the maps. However there is a limit to the size of the cache and once this limit is reached older map data (oldest viewed maps) is replaced with newer areas downloaded. See the options for the cache for more details on how to manage this.

Pocket Streetmap can also load whilst synchronised with the desktop, providing a much cheaper alternative to using a mobile internet data link. We do suggest that you use a USB connection with your pocket pc if you plan do download maps in this fashion, it is much faster than a serial connection.

We also suggest that if you plan to travel to a known area and need navigation information for that area, that you search for your destination then select the Load Local Area command to load local maps.

When it first starts the program will start in at a fixed location point. Thereafter it starts at the last location.

Tapping the display will centre that location on the display. Pressing and holding the stylus on the display will pan the display in that direction.

A GPS receiver, whilst not required for use, can help aid in navigation. GPS will, when outside, give accurate location position information. This enables Pocket Streetmap to give a moving map display and to provide alarm caution for speed cautions. See the Start GPS command and options for GPS and NMEA for more details on GPS control.

If serious about getting data whilst on the move we would suggest that a either a GPRS data card or a bluetooth connection to a GPRS mobile phone as the best option. Conatct us for more details on mobile data connectivity solutions.

Troubleshooting

Most problems with Pocket Streetmap are associated with getting an internet connection. The Pocket Streetmap slave loader is a program that runs on the desktop enabling Pocket Streetmap running on your pocket pc to get internet data through the desktop internet connection, if you have a blue s in the taskbar next to the clock on your desktop then this program is running. When loading data from the Internet the pocket pc should be connected using active sync and a internet link should be active on the desktop. Consult PocketStreetmap.com for more troubleshooting information.

The following sections describe the commands available from the menus in Pocket Streetmap. There are additionally a set of icons on the task bar to zoom in (+) zoom out (-) search (binoculars) and start/stop the GPS (4 way arrows)

Quit

This command will exit the Pocket Streetmap program.

Start GPS

This command will start the GPS receiver. When started the status of the receiver link can be seen in the lower right corner of the display. This will move through the following states:

  • Activating : displayed to indicate that a link to the GPS is being attempted
  • Port Open : displayed to indicate that a link to the GPS is active
  • Receiving : displayed to indicate that NMEA data is being received from the GPS
  • Receiving with satellite status : displayed to indicate that NMEA data is being received from the GPS and satellite status has been received [in use/number visible]
  • Tracking : displayed to indicate that NMEA locations are being received with the current speed [number of satellites in use]

When the GPS is tracking the map is automatically centred on your current location. A red circle with an arrow is drawn in the middle of the display, the red arrow pointing your current direction on the map. Maps are always orientated to the north. If you have set a destination (see the Waypoints option) then a green arrow will also appear pointing the direction (as the crow flies) to that destination location.

Additionally the GPS can be started/stopped by selecting the 4 way arrow icon on the task bar.

See the options for GPS and NMEA for more details on GPS control.

Stop GPS

This command will present a dialog enabling search parameters to be specified. Enter the location to search for in the box, select the appropriate type of search and select search. The system will attempt to find the location and either display it on the display with a red circle or provide you with a list of possible choices if there is abmbiguity.

A list of previous searches (20) is also maintained in the drop down list of the box. Select the arrow symbol to the right of the box to select one of these previous searches.

Note that, unless one of the previous searches is selected, an internet connection will be required to perform a search.

This command can also be invoked by selecting the binocular icon on the menu bar.

Load local area maps

This command will load street, town and road level maps for the point currently in the centre of the display. 5km x 5km (2.5km either side) of street maps are loaded. 10km x 10km (5km either side) of town maps are loaded. 50km x 50km (25km either side) of road maps are loaded. This will normally take several minutes, depending on the speed of your internet link, and take around 3mb of cache space. A green count message is displayed in the lower left corner of the display indicating the number of maps left to download.

Go to home location

This command will centre the map on the designated home location. See the waypoints option for setting the home location.

Show local entertainment

This command will provide a list of local entertainment listings. These listings are categorised into Lice Music, Club, Theatre/comedy and Cinema. The listings are then further sub categorised by date, then by venue. Click on the + symbol next to each category to display the details for that category including the performance details, location of the venue and more information from the internet (note that the web info link will require an internet connection)

The last search made is cached on the device and used if the current location is within 5km of that last entertainment listing search.

Program Options

The program options display lists the parameters that control the running of the program. The parameters are gathered in groups of functionality, each group being described in the following sections. To navigate through the option groups select the small arrows in the bottom right corner to scroll through the displays.

Cache

These options control the management of the program map:

  • Size : controls the maximum amount of memory dedicated to the file cache. Select the arrow to the right of the size to select a new size. The letters after the numbers indicate the magnifier where K = kilobyte and M = megabyte, eg 2M is two megabytes of file cache. The maximum allowed size of the cache is 20 megabytes.
  • Clear Cache : this option will delete all of the files currently in the cache in order to free space on the Pocket PC
  • Location : This specifies the location of the file cache on the device
  • Browse : This provides a dialog to select a new location for the file cache. Eg to change the file cache to a compact flash card, select the browse button, then change the Location option from Main Memory to Storage Card or Slot 2 etc. Note that changing the location of the file cache will automatically cause a Clear Cache.

GPS

These options control the management of the GPS receiver.

  • Enable GPS Support : enables the use of the GPS receiver. This option must be selected in order for GPS functions to work.
  • Port : this option selects the communication port to be used to talk to the GPS receiver. GPS cards plugged into the unit are normally on com 4. Those connected by an external cable are normally on com 1
  • Speed : The communication port speed in the form baud rate, parity, data bits, stop bits eg 4800,n,8,1 most receivers work on 4800,n,8,1
  • Automatically start GPS on program start : If selected then the program will automatically attempt to start the GPS receiver when the program starts. Useful if the device is fitted permanently with a GPS receiver, eg in a vehicle

The NMEA options below also control the use of the data received form the GPS receiver.

NMEA

The NMEA options control the use of the data received form the GPS receiver. The GPS receiver should have been activated in the GPS options first.

The NMEA data is a standard used to provide GPS data, however some receivers support different subsets of the data. If you know which subset to use the select the appropriate setting, otherwise set the $GPSRMC option

The cold start feature is not yet active in production versions of the software.

Waypoints

The waypoints options provide simple waypoint functionality. Two waypoints can be set Home and Destination. The home waypoint is used by the Go To Home Location menu command. The destination waypoints is used by the GPS display.

Selecting the Use Current Location As Home option will set the current location displayed on the map as the home location.

Selecting the Use Current Location As Destination option will set the current location displayed on the map as the destination location.

Selecting the Clear Destination Location option will clear the destination location.

Traffic

The Traffic options control the display and management of the traffic information on the display.

  • Show traffic on road level maps : When selected, icons indicating the traffic status are displayed on road level maps
  • Show traffic on town level maps : When selected, icons indicating the traffic status are displayed on town level maps
  • Show traffic on street level maps :When selected, icons indicating the traffic status are displayed on street level maps

  • Show caution on road level maps : When selected, icons indicating the speed cautions are displayed on road level maps
  • Show caution on town level maps : When selected, icons indicating the speed cautions are displayed on town level maps
  • Show caution on street level maps :When selected, icons indicating the speed cautions are displayed on street level maps
  • Reload when program starts : When selected, the speed restriction data is reloaded when the program starts up (requires internet connection)
  • Alarm : selects the condition to generate a speed caution alarm, either only when exceeding the speed caution or always. Note that alarms are only triggered when using a GPS to track your current location. The alarm is audible as well as presenting a flashing message on the display.
  • Show notification alarm : (Pocket PC 2002 only) If selected, when an alarm is activated, a notification dialog is also shown to warn the user of the speed caution.

Online

The online options control access to the internet. The program will go online automatically to retrieve maps and search data. Unless the program is forced online with the connect/disconnect option, the program goes online when required. After 30 seconds of inactivity it will go offline.

The connect to internet option determines whether the program will try to attempt an internet connection (either through a mobile link or desktop connection)

The box underneath the go online option is used to select the dial up networking connection to use when attempting to go online through a mobile internet link (this option is ignored in Pocket PC 2002).

The network servers option selects the network servers to retrieve information form, unless directed the option should be left set to both primary and secondary.

Diagnostics

The connection test commands are used to test the internet connection and should only be used when directed.

The GPS track is used to record and playback a GPS receiving session. Please be aware that using the record option for an extended period of time can potentially produce large files and therefore should only be used with caution.
